Thorens SoundWall HP 600: The top speaker that combines with room acoustics
Over 40 years ago, Thorens achieved a stroke of genius with the SoundWall models HP 360 and HP 380: speakers that radiate the entire audio range as dipoles. Maybe we were a little too ahead of our time back then. The SoundWalls, on the other hand, fit today's facilities and listening habits perfectly. Which is why we simply redeveloped it again. However, the new SoundWall HP 600 adopts the radical concept of its forebears: It radiates equally strongly to the back and front, and at the same time directs this sound much more precisely and evenly than conventional speakers. This brings tangible advantages, especially in larger listening rooms. With its dipole characteristic, the Thorens SoundWall HP 600 interacts more predictably and constructively with the acoustic conditions in the listening room across the entire frequency range. This is even more important in the current living style than it was 40 years ago: spacious rooms, hard floors, glass surfaces and modern furnishings create an extremely poor environment for conventional, wide-beam speakers. The SoundWall HP 600 makes these same conditions its allies. It brings perfectly vivid stereo imaging, agile bass and dynamic dynamics to your listening position - without compromise.
Open baffles: Sound sails with many advantages
The SoundWall HP 600 is – like its historical model – a three-way loudspeaker based on the open baffle principle. All woofers and midrange drivers are mounted so that they can swing freely in their super-flat baffle, so they have no housing or other damping material on the back. Such constructions are popular because of their nimble, impulsive style of play. Developer Joachim Gerhard has ensured that classic hi-fi virtues are not neglected. It's not just the superb quality of modern loudspeaker drivers that simply didn't exist 40 years ago. But also his decades of experience in building breathtaking high-end speakers - for example for Audio Physic and Süsskind. The “Dynamic Dozen” provides pressure in the low frequencies
A challenge with open baffles is always the bass. With the resources and possibilities of the 80s, the original SoundWall was able to achieve a decent, but not stunning, low frequency - despite the combined forces of 15 woofers per stereo channel. In the new SoundWall HP 600 there are “only” 12, slightly larger, copies per side. But thanks to clever circuitry, this dynamic dozen achieves high efficiency and at the same time impressive depth, which effortlessly reaches down to 40 Hertz. The level stability of the new construction is almost unbelievable: The SoundWall HP 600 can create a “wall of sound” – confidently and with any style of music."Dipol meets D'Appolito" in the mid-treble
Two midrange drivers take two tweeters into their center in the upper baffle area of the SoundWall HP 600. The tweeters work back to back to fully maintain the dipole character right up to the upper end of the transmission range. This results in a free, open sound with outstandingly accurate imaging. The closely concentric arrangement of the chassis according to the D'Appolito principle ensures an additional, symmetrical focus of the mid-high frequency energy. The level of the rear tweeter can also be adjusted for fine tuning.Concentrated technology in a homely design sound furniture
With twelve 15-centimeter woofers, two mid-range drivers and two tweeters per channel, the SoundWall HP 600 also has a certain visual presence. Thanks to its very low overall depth, the graceful wing profile and the finest materials such as solid aluminum and fine wood veneers, the SoundWall HP 600 integrates surprisingly effortlessly into a wide variety of furnishing styles. But it really becomes invisible in terms of sound: its subtle, broadband and dynamic sound appears as if from nowhere at the listening position. Thanks to the combined area of the 24 woofers, extremely high, undistorted levels are also possible. You don't always need them, but they are still crucial for a truly authentic sound. Huge amplifiers are not necessary for this: efficiency and impedance are high, amplifier-friendly. The SoundWall HP 600 can therefore be operated convincingly with practically any transistor and most tube amplifiers.
