SHUNYATA RESEARCH DELTA-X: cleaner power for better sound > The Absolute Sound review

When upgrading a hi-fi system, most people first think of speakers, an amplifier or a DAC. Mains power often gets overlooked, even though it determines how much of your equipment’s potential can actually come through. The SHUNYATA RESEARCH DELTA-X is an eight-outlet AC power conditioner that cleans the mains supply before it reaches your electronics and reduces the interference components pass on to one another.

How the DELTA-X works

The American manufacturer builds its design on two ideas: fast current delivery during dynamic peaks, and preventing interference between components. TAPc technology passively reduces electromagnetic distortion, while QR/BB provides a local energy reserve on demand, without coils, transformers or capacitors. GPNR filters ground noise, the NIC chamber absorbs high-frequency interference, and multi-stage CCI modules protect neighbouring components from noise. The conductors undergo 96 hours of KPIP v2 treatment, so the unit settles in faster.
Key specifications: maximum current 20 A, four isolation zones, and noise reduction of more than 50 dB from input to output and more than 60 dB between zones (across 100 kHz to 30 MHz). Dimensions are 53 x 10 x 23 cm and weight is 6.4 kg. The unit can sit on a shelf or be turned over with the outlets facing up, which saves space.

What you hear

The biggest difference is a lower noise floor. Music rises out of a blacker silence, so you hear more detail: the texture of voices, individual players within string sections, separate instruments in dense arrangements. Dynamic contrasts are bolder, and bass is deeper and better defined. Spatial depth is especially noticeable: when the DELTA-X powers digital sources and the DAC, the soundstage extends out in front of the speakers, and instruments and layered vocals separate more clearly.
A reviewer at The Absolute Sound, Andrew Quint, long sceptical about power conditioning, described the improvement as the single biggest jump in sound quality he had ever experienced. He stressed that the effects are cumulative, so the DELTA-X can be complemented with Shunyata power cords for even more detail, but the conditioner alone already makes an audible difference. The better the system, the bigger the difference, and as a rule of thumb he suggests allocating roughly a tenth of the system’s value to power products.

Who is the DELTA-X for

Anyone who wants to get more from existing equipment without replacing components. According to published measurements, the DELTA-X offers the same noise suppression as the more expensive Everest-X model, which has a larger enclosure and additional technologies.
